 Gemological Institute of America will host David Warren, senior director, Christie’s of London, at the next Gemstone Gathering on Jan. 19 in Bangkok. Warren’s lecture, “The Peculiar Life of an Auctioneer,” will provide insight into how Christie’s operates and his personal tiffany co jewelry from more than 30 years in handling some of the world’s finest gemstones.
Warren began his career with Christie’s 32 years ago in the Jeweler Department in Scotland and moved to Christie’s Head Office in London in 1980. He relocated to Hong Kong in 1993 to set up jewelry, watch and jadeite auctions and to develop Christie’s jewelry expansion in South East Asia. Warren returned to London in 1995 as head of Jeweler after Hong Kong’s annual sales soared to $40 million and a skilled team of specialists was established.
More recently, Warren was responsible for starting Christie’s jewelry and watch auctions in Dubai in 2007 and for developing jewelry activities throughout the Middle East. A major event in this region was “The Royal House” sale in 2006 that totaled $36 million and was 100 percent sold – the tiffany engagement rings total for any single owner jewelry collection ever sold by Christie’s.
Warren has achieved many other world record prices for jewels sold at auction. He has written numerous articles and lectured extensively in South East Asia, South America, the Middle East and the United Kingdom.

Jan. 16, featured an interesting and wide-ranging mix of fashion statements. Winning combinations included chic sequined gowns paired with diamonds, while one neon pink number (on Julianne Moore)—a Lavin gown with an asymmetrical neckline and a giant poufy sleeve that swallowed up half a tiffany charm bracelet collar necklace—didn’t win many votes of approval.
The most attractive ensembles of the night, no surprise, featured an ideal balance of sparkle and fabric.
Consider Shaun Robinson in a charcoal-grey gown with light grey sequins by Today Shaker; it was carefully accessorized with complimentary shades of diamonds—black and colorless drop earrings from golden tiffany earrings are very pretty, and a blackened silver ring from M.C.L. by Matthew Campbell Laurens.
Then there’s Helen Mire in a champagne-colored Bagley Ischia strapless gown with an embroidered shrug and sheer layers; it was adorned with Cartier platinum Cascading Diamond necklace featuring 55.08 cuts. Taw. (retail $1,650,000), in addition to matching earrings and a bracelet, all with decorative effects that complimented the couture.
Sofia Verger, meanwhile, channeled sexy in a red sleeveless Vera Wang gown that was cinched at the waist with a black belt. Her David Webb jewels included colorless diamond chandelier earrings, an oversize colorless diamond ring, and two colorless diamond cuffs—one worn higher on the arm, mirroring the belt’s cinched effect—and gave the outfit an elegant balance of colors and styling.
As for the rest of the stars, many wore conservative amounts and styles of jewels, including diamond stud earrings in platinum, worn by a multitude of stars, including Scarlett Johansson and Anne Hathaway in colorless and yellow diamonds from Van Clef & Rappels; Halle Berry in colorless Harry Winston rocks; Eva Longoria in colorless studs from Neil Lane; Julie Bowen in champagne diamonds from Martin Katz; Juliana Margulies in colorless stones from Cartier; and, Natalie Portman in colorless stones from Tiffany & Co.
A few pieces of hair jewelry, on Jennifer Lopez and Scarlett Johansson (who tucked a diamond and platinum pin circa 1934 into the side of her undo) commanded attention, while some long-sleeve gowns (à la Angelina Jolie) might have looked more interesting with bigger rings on wearers’ fingers.

Amethyst drop earrings from Martin Katz and Maria Minoans’ smoky and pink quartz ring from Broman. Piles of bracelets looked pretty on the arms of Halle Berry (in five Harry Winston bracelets) as well as multiples on Sandra Bullock and Heidi Klum.
``We've been waiting for this week all year and this week is terrible,'' Sakharov said. ``People don't have money. They can't afford to buy diamonds or gold. What they're buying is cubic my favorite coach bags, silver or stainless.''
Shoppers have also been hit by the skyrocketing price of gold, which set a record at $1,432.50 earlier this month. That means bargains may be few.
At Broward's Beverly's Jewelers, owner Jeff Melvin’s solution has been to offer more high-fashion silver jewelry. His three stores in Fort Lauderdale and Pembroke coach purses outlet
, have a wide selection of silver ranging from $200 to $2,500, for larger items with diamonds.
``Silver is the new gold,'' Melvin said. ``People want to treat themselves or their wife or girlfriend. They want to feel good again.''
Mayor's has seen increased demand from some consumers for jewelry under $1,000, said Eva Hurtling, spokeswoman for the company whose U.S. office is in Tamarac.
``Customers really do their research now,'' Hurtling said. ``They want the best piece and the best price. ''
For Sandy Sequin, owner of Morays Jewelers, a turning point in her business this year was the renewal of the Bush-era tax cuts.
Morays has sold more than two dozen luxury watches this season ranging from $100,000 to $500,000 and seen a boom in sale of diamond coach handbags outlet and rings. .
